Significance

Throughout this site, the videos and images are rarely speaking on individuals consuming dumplings but rather consumed in the company of others. Most of the clips regarding the making of dumplings, Chinese or American, refer to the memories it evokes and the story behind a family recipe. With these stories, it becomes evident that this dish is more than just food but a way to connect with others and to remember loved ones while eating delicious dumplings. This is the cultural impact that food has on society. Not only is this the case with dumplings, but many other foods.

This evidence as food as a center for community dates all the way back to the Chosun Dynasty of Korea. Although dumplings were eaten in everyday life for many people, they were also seen as a popular dish served at royal events and national banquets. The dumplings served at these prominent Korean events were highly decorative in the way they were folded and also contained more diverse fillings.

Dumplings then spread across the globe as a type of human construction, noted by Rachel Laudan in her book Cuisine and Empire. Through personal connection with politics, society, economy, and overall health needs, food evolves over time as we communicate with one another. Without this communication, it may have stayed much more stagnant.
