UDC Symbols

The UDC is rich with Confederate symbolism. Many of the badges worn by members possess a variation of the Confederate flag or the dates of the American Civil War. These badges are another example of how memorial groups like the UDC unified women under a common cause. The UDC logo is also present on most of the donated monuments as well. The use of the symbols created a bond between the women, furthering the appeal of membership.

For women, stepping out into the public world was new and was not often something one wanted to do totally on her own. The UDC allowed women a chance to explore new opportunities alongside others with similar goals while also advancing their positions in society. The UDC also allowed women to continue professing their loyalty and perseverance to the Lost Cause and their former antebellum lifestyle.
